John Cheney, Composer and Musician
John Cheney has been on a musical adventure for most of his life. Beginning with piano lessons at an early age, he went on to receive a Bachelor of Arts in (music) Scoring & Arranging from the University of Colorado, as well as studying at the summer music programs at Naropa Institute in Boulder, Colorado with pianists Art Lande and Bill Douglas.
As a composer, John wrote several works for dance, theater, and sound design for an outdoor dinosaur museum. As a keyboard player, he has performed with an eclectic list of bands and styles including jazz, free improvisation, blues, and varied rock groups. Opening for groups such as Bighead Todd and the Monsters, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, and Airpocket (Frank Zappa's Original "Mothers of Invention"), John was also a founding member of Gamelan Tunas Mekar (in Denver for six years), a group dedicated to performing the rich music of Bali Indonesia on their Native instruments, known as a Gamelan.
Studying in Bali for six months with master musician I Ketut Madri and continuing his studies and performance with artist-in-residence master musician I Made Lasmawan in Denver, John currently resides in Seattle teaching piano and enjoying a career in the healing arts as an acupressurist and family constellation facilitator. He also performs with two musical projects, Phlonomenon, a spontaneous composition ensemble, and the Bluesuasions, a straight ahead blues band.
